Nail salon ventilation: why dust and fume control at the manicure table matters

A nail salon is a small workshop. Products, solvents and filing dust are all in the air at the same table where the technician works for hours. Ventilation protects the people who work there and makes the salon pleasanter for clients. This guide summarises what the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) advises, and what it means when you choose furniture.

What are the hazards?

NIOSH notes that nail products often contain chemicals such as acetone, formaldehyde, toluene, methacrylate compounds and triphenyl phosphate. Workers can breathe in dusts or vapours, absorb chemicals through the skin, or ingest them. NIOSH lists possible effects of overexposure including skin rash or contact dermatitis, eye, nose and throat irritation, asthma, neurological effects, reproductive problems and cancer. It also notes that awkward postures and repetitive motions such as filing can lead to musculoskeletal disorders.

What does NIOSH recommend?

  • Good general room ventilation to reduce airborne chemical levels.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at workstations, for example portable units that filter air or exhaust it outdoors, or downdraft ventilated tables.
  • Closing chemical containers and using pressure-sensitive dispenser bottles with small openings.
  • Not eating or drinking in the work area.
  • Personal protective equipment such as gloves and an N95 filtering facepiece respirator.
  • Equipment that supports good posture, such as adjustable chairs, and regular breaks.

What this means for your manicure table

Local exhaust works best when it is part of the station, not an afterthought. A manicure table with a built-in extraction option puts the air intake close to where the work happens, keeps the surface cleaner and avoids loose cables and portable units on the floor. Decide on it when you order the table, because adding it later is harder.

Local rules on ventilation and workplace safety differ by country, so check what applies to your salon. Our manicure tables are made to order with drawers, a hand cushion and an extraction option; see the manicure table buying guide and our products.
