Salon hygiene: 10 signs your clients notice, and how furniture helps
Clients rarely say that they judged your salon on hygiene, but they do. Within a minute of walking in they have noticed the surfaces, the tools and the towels. The American Academy of Dermatology tells the public what to look for, so these are the signs worth getting right, along with the way furniture can help.

Ten signs clients look for
- Trained, licensed technicians. The first thing dermatologists advise checking. Display licences or training certificates where clients can see them.
- Clean stations. Surfaces should be clear, dry and wiped between clients. Tables with a smooth, wipe-clean top make this quick.
- Handwashing between clients. It should be visible and routine. Place a basin or sanitiser where clients can see it.
- No dirty tools lying around. Used tools are cleaned, and clean tools are stored out of the way. Closed drawers and covered trays keep them out of sight.
- An honest answer about tool cleaning. Clients are advised to ask how tools are cleaned. Be ready to explain it simply.
- Foot baths and filters that are disinfected. Dermatologists advise that these are thoroughly disinfected, so choose basins that are easy to clean between clients.
- Fresh towels and linen. Every client should get clean linen. Storage cabinets that close keep clean and used linen separate.
- Surfaces that look cared for. Chipped, swollen or stained surfaces suggest poor cleaning. A durable finish keeps a salon looking clean for longer.
- Fresh, ventilated air. Dust and fumes are noticeable. Plan ventilation, and consider dust extraction at manicure stations.
- An uncluttered reception. Clients form their first impression at the desk. A tidy counter, a defined waiting area and somewhere to put coats and bags keep the entrance calm.
How furniture supports hygiene
Furniture cannot make a salon hygienic by itself, because that depends on your routines. But the right pieces make good routines easier to follow and easier to see: smooth wipe-clean surfaces, closed storage, a layout with space to clean around every piece, and finishes that survive daily cleaning products.
