Therapist ergonomics: how massage table height affects back and shoulder strain
A massage table is a tool that the therapist uses for hours every day. If it is at the wrong height, the therapist compensates with the back, shoulders and wrists, and the strain builds up. Work-related musculoskeletal strain is commonly reported among massage therapists, which is why the table deserves attention when you plan a spa.

Why height matters
When the table is too low, the therapist bends forward and rounds the back to reach the client. When it is too high, the shoulders lift and the arms tire quickly. Neither posture can be held comfortably over a full working day, and both reduce how steadily pressure can be applied.
A common rule of thumb
A frequently used guide is to set the table so that, with the arms relaxed at the sides, the therapist's fingertips or knuckles reach about the table surface. The right height also depends on the technique: work that needs body weight, such as deeper pressure, is usually done with a lower table than lighter work. Treat the rule as a starting point and adjust for the therapist and the treatments.
Fixed or adjustable?
- A fixed-height table is the most rigid and stable, which clients feel as quiet, solid support. It works well where the same treatments are done at a standard height and the therapists are similar in height.
- If a room is shared by therapists of very different heights, or by treatments that need different heights, tell your supplier before ordering. Options include setting the fixed height to suit the main user, or choosing a model designed to adjust.
Other things that reduce strain
- A stable table, so the therapist does not have to compensate for movement.
- Space to move around all sides of the table without squeezing past furniture.
- Storage for oils, linen and tools within easy reach, so the therapist does not twist or stretch repeatedly.
- A rest area for therapists between appointments.
